Woman pays price for rejecting marriage proposal in north Delhi

burningA man set a 25-year-old woman on fire in Bhalswa Dairy area in north Delhi on 29 August for reportedly turning down his wedding proposal.

The accused, Abhishek, his friends Vijay and Karan and others went to the victim’s house and pounced on the woman’s relatives and beat them.

Gita, victim’s kin, said, “On the ill-fated day, 20 to 25 men came and started beating us with iron rods. Abhishek’s four to five uncles were also there. When she refused to marry him, Abhishek poured kerosene on her, set her on fire and ran away,” she added.

They had been troubling and harassing her from the past seven to 10 days. When she couldn’t tolerate any further, the woman told her brother who asked the accused to stay away from her, Gita said.

According to the police, the accused and his friends brutally beat the girl’s brother, who sustained severe head injuries. He has been admitted to a hospital.

The police have arrested the three accused under Sections 307, 452, 323 and 34 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
