Congress Vice-President Rahul Gandhi, met sanitation workers or safai karamcharis, who have been on strike since June 2, as they haven’t been paid their salaries for April and May, in East Delhi. Mr. Gandhi, assuring his support, said he will take up their battle.

“If you ask this government, you won’t get anything. But if you come together and show your strength, your work will be done in five minutes. This strike is the right way to go,” Rahul said.

About 12, 000 sanitation workers of East Delhi Municipal Corporation have been on strike, for ten days now.

“You won’t get the solution by asking the government. It will happen by showing your strength. I will sit on dharna with you if you want for 10 days. We must show the strength of safai karamcharis,” said Mr. Gandhi, adding, “You are like soldiers. I will come to your help whenever you need.”

Meanwhile, Delhi Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung, met mayors of three BJP-ruled municipal bodies and informed them that, the government of Delhi will release Rs. 493 crore to cover dues and pay salaries of sanitation workers who have been on strike for 10 days.
