Congress president Sonia Gandhi, former PM Manmohan Singh, party vice president Rahul Gandhi and other Congress members were detained on 6 May and later released.

They had taken part in a protest march—Loktantra Bachao March—against the ruling government. The march started from Jantar Mantar.

Before the march, the ruling government was roundly slammed by the Congressmen. They also accused the government of attacking democracy. The march was focused mainly against the BJP who attacked Sonia over the controversial AgustaWestland deal.

Sonia, in her speech, attacked the ruling NDA government over dislodging and imposing President’s Rule in two Congress-ruled states of Arunachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. She alleged that it was done through blatant use of money power.

She asked Congress workers to unmask the Modi government but in a democratic manner. “We must take the detractors head-on. Life has taught me to struggle. Little do they know what we are made of. Don’t make the mistake of thinking that Congress is weak. We will not let democratic institutions  be weakened or destroyed,” added Sonia.

“At a time when almost 40 percent of the country is affected by drought, it is unfortunate that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has nothing to say,” said Rahul. “The BJP was responsible for dislodging Congress governments,” he added.

Speaking at the rally, Manmohan Singh accused Modi of attacking democracy. “By bringing down elected governments, he has made it sure that democracy goes for a toss in the country. The party will continue to make sacrifices and ensure that democracy is safe,” he added.

Rahul is expected to take part in a discussion on AgustaWestland issue in the Lok Sabha on 6 May.
