Residents of a society in Navi Mumbai were shocked when they saw merchant navy officer Dhruvkant Vimal Thakur come out of the building in blood-stained clothes and confess to have killed two people in his flat in cold blood.

Trouble began soon after Dhruvkant got married to his wife, Sushmita, five years ago. After marriage, the couple began to live in Sector 19 in Kamothe. They had frequent altercations. A frustrated Sushmita left Dhruvkant’s house seven months ago.

All the while, Dhruvkant’s sister remained unaware of the differences between the duo, so it came as a surprise when Sushmita demanded a divorce from Dhruvkant.

She developed relations with one Ajay Kumar Singh and expressed her desire to get married to him. With the intention of taking a divorce from Dhruvkant, she, along with Ajay, reached his flat to get the divorce papers which she had given to him when he returned from work after one-and-a-half months.

Kamal Singh, the watchman of the building, confirmed, “Sushmita had left seven months ago and when she and Ajay went into the flat they were unaware that Dhruvkant, 29, was already in the flat.” The merchant naval officer was angry when Ajay showed him intimate photographs of his with Sushmita.

Immediately, Dhruvkant pounced on Ajay and slit his throat several times and choked Sushmita to death with a pillow. Unable to come to terms with what he had done, Dhruvkant wanted to commit suicide. He tried to hang from the ceiling fan with a tie, which broke.

Dhruv then called up his sister and spilled the beans and told her that he was committing suicide. His sister, in turn, told the police, who found Thakur sitting outside the building’s gate in blood-stained clothes. The police charged Dhruv with murder under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code.
