The five boys of the boy band One Direction no more seem to be walking in the same direction. The band confirmed Zayn Malik’s decision to leave the band via Twitter . While millions of teenage girls gasped at the news, Zayn leveraged his right “to be a normal 22-year-old”. Talk of an impending split between the band and Malik surfaced since last week when he did not accompany his band members on an Asian tour citing “stress”.
Captivating the teenage audience with their magnetic boyish charm and gaining their parent’s approval with their safe and sappy lyrics it has been a meteoric rise for One Direction. The band has set a record by topping the charts of U.S. Billboard with their four albums consecutively. They also happen to be the richest pop-band in Britain. The band was formed when Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Liam Payne, Louis Tomlinson and Zayn Malik were spotted and signed by Simon Cowell’s Syco Records in The X Factor.
Zayn Malik was anointed as “the Mysterious One” by his fans and has seen his share of controversies. A video that showed him and Louis Tomlinson smoking cannabis caused quite a stir. Moreover, he had to face flak when he was photographed getting cozy with an unknown woman in Thailand while girlfriend Perrie Edwards remained in the dark. This prompted Malik to tweet, “I love a girl named Perrie Edwards. And there’s a lot of jealous fucks in this world I’m sorry for what it looks like x.”
It is worth noting that Zayn happened to be the least popular member of the band gathering the lowest number of followers on the social media sites of Twitter and Instagram. However, critics warn that there is a history of bands falling apart following the departure of one of their members. But fans hope in the light of the seemingly amicable split and the consequent supportive responses that were issued by the rest of the band it seems to be a minor setback for the phenomenon that is One Direction.
