Prime Minister Narendra Modi dressed in a white T-shirt and trouser along with a scarf, led around 40,000 yoga enthusiasts on second International Yoga Day at the Capitol Complex, here this morning.

Concerned about the rising health-related issues in the country Modi said yoga gives health benefits on “zero budget”. While addressing a gathering, he asked the yoga trainers to treat diabetes through yoga. “They must continue doing yoga, while focusing on diabetes,” said Modi. It will be an achievement if we can help in treating diabetes through yoga. For health concerns, I believe one disease be taken up every yoga day,” he quipped.

A yoga enthusiast, Modi performed yoga along with the participants— from Chandigarh, Punjab and Haryana—who did asanas on pink and blue coloured mats.

Over 190 countries, including 40 Islamic nations, supported the move to have a special day for yoga and hence June 21 was declared as the International Day of Yoga by the United Nations General Assembly in December 2014. Since then, Yoga Day has garnered massive support from across the world.

The Prime Minister also laid focus on ‘Divyangs’ (disabled), a term coined by him. Around 150 Divyangs were helped in performing yoga asanas at the venue. Later, the PM mingled with the participants, while some took selfies with him.

Around 40,000 people participated at the IYD 2016 at Capitol Complex, Chandigarh.

The venue was divided into eight blocks with several LED screens being installed for the large gathering. 300 bio-toilets and 30,000 mats were also available for the participants. This apart, more than 5,000 police and paramilitary personnel were deployed at the venue.

Among those who participated included Punjab and Haryana Governor and UT administrator Kaptan Singh Solanki, Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal and Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar.

While the Prime Minister performed yoga asanas, around 5,000 police personnel were deployed to keep a hawk-eye vigil on the International Yoga Day event. The UT Police also called for additional police force from Punjab, Haryana, and paramilitary forces. According to the sources, few days before the main event, PM’s Special Protection Group (SPG) along with the senior police officials also visited the Capitol Complex, Raj Bhawan, and the airport. To keep things under control, the team also checked the CCTV cameras installed around the complex.

This  was Modi’s second visit to Le Corbusier designed Capitol Complex, where on 24 January  this year, he also hosted French President Francois Hollande.
