Having got six quotas by participating in various qualification meets, India ought to be celebrating. However, it finds itself in a mess.
While two-time Olympic medallist Sushil Kumar going to Rio Olympic Games is uncertain, the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) stated they have recommended Narsingh Pancham Yadav in the list sent to Indian Olympic Association.
It may be noted India’s successful wrestler, Sushil Kumar, demanded a domestic selection trial so that he could go to Rio for a third medal.
Sushil since going to 74kg from 66kg, has only participated at the 2014 Commonwealth Games where he won gold medal.
“All I am asking for is to take part in the trails. I’m not saying you send me to Rio Olympics. I am only saying whoever between me and Narsingh is better must represent India at Olympics. There is a procedure that should be followed,” said the 32-year-old, who won bronze at Beijing and silver in London in the 66kg category.
Sushil doesn’t have much experience in the 74-kg category, which is why the federation went with Narsingh who has been competing in this category.
