With only one win against next-door neighbours Scotland, England’s World Cup campaign was already in tatters. They needed to win against Bangladesh to keep their hopes alive in the tournament. But sadly, the English lions looked listless and crashed to a 15-run defeat against Bangladesh. The result means that the Eoin Morgan led side is now out of the World Cup. They have only one meaningless match against minnows Afghanistan.
Having won the toss, Eoin Morgan put Bangladesh in to bat. And Bangladesh posted an impressive 275 / 7 in their allotted 50 overs. They got off to a poor star losing two wickets early on but recovered thanks to a splendid ton by Mahmudullah who scored an aggressive 103 . It was his country’s first individual World Cup hundred and Mushfiqur Rahim making 89. For England James Anderson 2-45, Chris Jordan 2-59 were the successful bowlers.
Chasing 276 for win, England struggled against a disciplined Bangladesh bowling and spirited fielding and crashed to 260 all out losing the match by mere 15 runs. Only Jos Buttler 65, Ian Bell 63 showed some intent as the rest did not live up to the expectations. For Bangladesh , Rubel Hossain 4-53, Mortaza 2-48, Taskin Ahmed 2-59 were the wreckers in chief. Bangladesh win means they go through in Pool A group in the quarters along with Australia, New Zealand , Sri Lanka.
England’s dismal Cup campaign is expected to come under intense scrutiny back home. And the issue of Kevin Pietersen and his likely return will only grow louder in the coming days.
