With Congress chief Sonia Gandhi reportedly unwell, Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi on November 7 chaired the CWC meeting, which may take a decision on postponing the party’s organisational elections.
Addressing the Congress Working Committee (CWC), the Gandhi scion flayed the BJP-led NDA government saying it “is mad after power” and tries to mute voices of those who disagree with it.
Congress leaders such as Manmohan Singh, P Chidambaram, Ghulam Nabi Azad, Janardan Dwivedi, Ahmed Patel, Ambika Soni and AK Antony are also attending the meeting.
Importance is attached to the meeting as the meeting has come before the winter session of Parliament starting November 16. The party is seeking to target the government on issues of freedom of speech and a day’s ban on a Hindi news channel.
Surgical strikes, killing of eight SIMI activists in an alleged encounter, triple talaq, uniform civil code and other issues are also likely to be raised.
The meeting is not likely to decide on Rahul’s elevation as a section within Congress feels this should be done after UP and Punjab polls.
The CWC meeting comes at a time when several party activists feel that the baton should be handed over by Sonia Gandhi to her son Rahul as she was indisposed.
