To fortify its presence in the market, five units, including Beetle and popular SUV Tiguan, will be launched in India by German auto major Volkswagen in the two years.
The programme was kicked off with the launch of Vento, which is priced between Rs 7.85 lakh and Rs 11.87 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi).
Volkswagen passenger cars director Michael Mayer told reporters India was a significant market for us. We plan to launch five units here in the next two years. Along with the launches, we plan to bring in new segments.”
“We will also launch a sub-4 meter compact sedan next year and bring Beetle to into India,” Mayer said. Further, the company is also planning the eighth generation of Passat sedan and brand new sports utility vehicle Tiguan, he added.
On the mid-sedan Vento , Mayer said: “The car has been our best product in the market and with the new changes, we are sure it will appeal to our customers.”
The new Vento comes in both petrol and diesel engines. Volkswagen is planning to make India a low-cost manufacturing hub by investing Rs 1,500 crore on localisation and producing cost-effective products.
It also plans to increase the production capacity at Chakan and Aurangabad units in next two years.
Volkswagen plans to increase its production to two lakh units by 2018 and add some more models from Chakan plant. In India, Volkswagen group has five brands—Audi, Volkswagen, Skoda, Porsche and Lamborghini.
