Uproar in Rajya Sabha over naming of Chandigarh airport

Chandigarh airportChaos reigned supreme in the Rajya Sabha on March 23 as the Opposition parties raised a demand to name the Chandigarh airport after martyr Bhagat Singh.

During Zero Hour, Ritabrata Banerjee of the CPM said there has been a row of sorts over the naming of the Chandigarh airport. Though the Punjab government had agreed to the proposal (to name the airport after the martyr), the Haryana CM had demurred. Instead, they want to name it after Mangal Sein.

Lending support, Congress leader Pratap Singh Bajwa said it was an unfortunate situation. While the BJP wants to name the airport after their ex-CM, the public wants it be named after Bhagat Singh.”

Countering the allegations, MoS for Parliamentary Affairs Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said, “Bhagat Singh was a martyr and should be respected by everyone. It is not proper of the members to make sweeping statements.”

As the confusion continued, Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman PJ Kurien asked Naqvi to take note of the suggestion to which he agreed.

Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad wanted the Centre to speak out clearly whether or not it was ready to take up the proposal.

Butting in, Kurien said, “The government has said the suggestion has been taken note of. They will consider it.”

Earlier, Bajwa demanded that a two-minute silence be observed on every March 23 before conducting the business of the House.
