LIVE: Two earthquakes cause widespread damage, Dharahara tower falls, deaths reported



The two earthquakes that hit Nepal just a few hours ago, measuring 7.9 and 6.6 on the Richter scale, has devastated the country.

Among the most devastating sites is the collapse of the iconic Dharahara tower, which now stands in complete ruin. Users have also posted images of a wrecked Basantarpur Durbar Square.

The Kathmandu airport has been shut down, amid sightings of cracks. All flights have been diverted to India.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has already spoken to Nepali officials. Reports have said that there are dozens of bodies lying in the streets with many more trapped under rubble.

Both Modi and AAP Chief Arvind Kejriwal have urged for calm. Kejriwal stated that officials are assessing the situation. Modi has disaster teams on standby. Two people have died in Bihar and one in West Bengal.

It has also been reported that power supply in Northern Bihar has been switched off for safety reasons.

Nepal has experienced a second earthquake that has greatly damaged the nation, according to reports. Mobile services have been affected. But there has been no word on casualties yet. The aftershock was of a magnitude of 6.6. The magnitude felt by the Delhi region was 5.

The Kutchery area of Varanasi has seen a stampede, but this is yet to be confirmed.
