Two kids of a Dalit family were burnt alive on 20 October when upper caste persons allegedly set fire to their house. The kids’ parents too suffered grievous injuries in the incident.
The incident took place at around 2 am in Sonped village in the vicinity of Delhi (Faridabad) when the family was asleep according to police.
Two-and-a-half-year-old Vaibhav and his 11-month-old sister Divya died on-the-spot. Two persons have been arrested in connection and an investigation is on to nab the other suspects.
Their mother Rekha suffered 70% burns. She has been referred to Delhi for treatment. Their father Jitender, who also suffered injuries while trying to save his family, alleged the attackers were Rajputs and a case was registered when they had an altercation with them in October.
“They warned to kill me and my family and told me never to return to the village. Later, when we did not move, in vengeance, they poured petrol from the window, while we were sleeping. I smelt the putrid smell of petrol and tried to wake up my wife up, but the fire had started by then and consumed my children,” said Jitender, crying.
Security has been tightened and we are probing the matter, said a police officer. Haryana chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar announced a compensation of Rs 10 lakh to the aggrieved family.
Meanwhile, Union home minister Rajnath Singh asked the chief minister to ensure security to everyone and prevent any recurrence of such incident. Demanding a report into the incident. He also expressed concern over the killing of two Dalit children
In a telephonic conversation with Khattar, Singh asked him “to ensure peace and that such incidents don’t recur in future.” The ministry also sought a report from the state administration
