Through The Viewfinder – How ‘saving cows’ threatens buffalo traders



A trader at the Ghazipur livestock market on the outskirts of Delhi tries to sell his buffalo. One of Asia’s biggest such markets, it gets cattle traders from Rajasthan, Punjab and Haryana who bring their buffaloes, sheep and goats to sell here but the traders feel their livelihood is at risk with the Gau Raksha Dal and other assorted ‘save the cow’ outfits accusing them of selling cows for slaughter. Mohd Akil Qurasi, president of the Buffalo Traders’ Association, says trucks carrying livestock have been attacked in the recent past and traders asked to pay up or face the music.
