Creating history in women’s tennis platform, Sania Mirza becomes the first female tennis player from India to achieve the world number one rank in doubles, following her astounding title win at the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) Family Circle Cup with Swiss tennis star Martina Hingis.

The top-seeded Indo-Swiss pair blew away the challenge of Casey Dellacqua and Darija Jurak 6-0, 6-4 in just 57 minutes in the lop-sided final of the $ 731,000 clay court event. The Indian Tennis ace Sania took 470 points from the win to take her tally to 7965 as she jumped past Italy’s Sara Errani (7640) and Roberta Vinci (7640) to sit atop the ranking table.

In the Indian tennis history, before Sania Mirza, only Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi had achieved the top rank when they dominated men’s double circuit in the last 90s. Mirza is also first female player from the country to win Grand Slam tournaments.

Congratulating on the huge success, Congress president Sonia Gandhi said Mirza has made the entire nation proud.

All India Tennis Association (AITA) chief Anil Khanna also hailed tennis ace Sania Mirza becoming the world number one in tennis doubles as one of the greatest achievements in Indian sporting history. He said, “Sania becoming the world number one is one of the greatest achievements for any Indian woman sportsperson in the history of Indian sports. It is a matter of great achievement for any Indian sports person.”
