Opposition parties in the state of Telangana raised hue and cry on 3 February. They requested Governor ESL Narasimhan to instruct the state government to arrest All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen chief and MP Asaduddin Owaisi and his brother MLA Akbaruddin for their alleged involvement in attack on Congress leaders during the municipal polls.
An all-party delegation, led by Leader of Opposition K Jana Reddy, met the Governor and submitted a memorandum. The delegation also demanded that the attacks on some of the Opposition leaders during Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) polls on 2 February be properly probed.
“We urge you to order a detailed inquiry in the episode and arrest Asaduddin Owaisi, MP and his brother Akbaruddin Owaisi, MLA, and their supporters who attacked public representatives,” the memorandum said.
In view of the attacks by the AIMIM hordes, the leaders asked the Governor to direct Telangana to provide exta security to Telangana Congress president Uttam Kumar Reddy and Mohammad Shabbir Ali, another party leader.
Ali, Leader of Opposition in Telangana Legislative Council, has filed a complaint against Asaduddin and others for allegedly assaulting him in Mirchowk.
Akbaruddin, Chandrayangutta MLA, has been booked for his alleged involvement in the attack on MK Mahender, a BJP civic poll candidate.
Earlier, speaking at an all-party meet, Jana Reddy said the Governor was empowered to supervise law and order under Section 8 of AP Reorganisation Act, 2014.
“This (attacks) is the height of violation of law and the government’s utter failure. AIMIM cadres abused Congress leaders and damaged vehicles. The Governor has a role to keep law and order in the city under Section 8 (of Reorganisation Act).”
BJP Floor leader in the Assembly K Laxman said the party candidate attacked by AIMIM followers belonged to SC community and hence a case under SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act be lodged against them.
Telangana Telugu Desam Party president L Ramana said Opposition leaders will meet home minister Rajnath Singh, PM Narendra Modi, and President Pranab Mukherjee and apprise them of the situation in the state.
