Nero may just be fiddling away in India, more specifically in Uttar Pradesh. Only, he’s known as Akhilesh Yadav, now.
The hooch tragedy in UP has so far claimed 41 lives, which includes 29 in the state capital and 12 in Unnao, a district adjoining Lucknow. But even as people die in Uttar Pradesh, Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav vacations in Mauritius; it could be some other foreign destination, yet to be confirmed.
More than 100 victims of the spurious liquor tragedy are still undergoing treatment in different hospitals in Lucknow. Though the government has announced a compensation of Rs 2 lakh to each of the deceased family and a crackdown on illicit liquor dens is underway, the chief minister is missing from action. As per information available with Tehelka, the CM, along with his family members, is on a 10-day vacation to some beautiful location abroad. In all probability, this location is Mauritius.
Though the official machinery of the UP government is tight-lipped about this trip, a statement issued by the BJP said that the CM’s visit to a foreign locale, when his own state is reeling under severe crisis, shows his insensitivity. “The hooch tragedy took place due to the laxity of the Excise Department, which is under the Chief Minister, but he is enjoying his vacation abroad,” the statement further said.
The state BJP stated that while, last week, Akhilesh avoided attending the NRI summit in Gujarat due to inclement weather, he did not face any problems while going on a vacation aborad. Meanwhile, the ruling Samajwadi Party has termed BJP’s accusation as mere frustration.
