Tamil Nadu prisons generate over Rs 36 crore, Kerala stands second

Among all prisons in the country, the prisons in Tamil Nadu generated Rs 36.97 crore in gross earnings. Kerala stood in the second position with Rs 21.43 crore and Bihar third with Rs 15.74 crore, according to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data of 2014.

Products made by the prisoners, range from bakery goods to leather items to handicrafts and clothing. These products are sold under a brand name—Freedom Bazaar. The products were showcased at the Global Investors’ meet held recently.

In 2014, 3000 prisoners were part of programmes such as weaving and agriculture. This apart, the prisoners are also enrolled in vocational training programmes. This ensures long-term rehabilitation of the prisoners.

According to a report in Deccan Chronicle, additional director general of police (Prisons) JK Tripathy said, this was made possible because of the state government policies, dedicated inmates and a spirited team of officials.
