Caught in the middle of a row over his travel documents and links with foreign minister Sushma Swaraj, Rajasthan chief minister Vasundhara Raje and others, former IPL chief Lalit Modi has decided not to make any more statements, he said, in an interview with CNN-IBN.
“There are a lot of relations, but I’m sorry I can’t give you a statement. My UK lawyers have asked me not to make any statement. They want to assess the situation and I shouldn’t make any statements,” he said.
NCP leaders, Sharad Pawar and Praful Patel, and RIL chairperson Mukesh Ambani had convinced a UK court in 2011 that it would be difficult for him to return to India.
Apart from politicians, a former Supreme Court judge too had endorsed the alleged offender’s claim to be hounded by the previous government and helped him stay on in London in 2012, as per Mail Today.
Former SC judge late Umesh C Banerjee, who was the chief justice of Andhra Pradesh High Court, had extended legal opinion in favour of Modi, which helped him extend his stay in the UK.
International lawyer Hemant Batra, founder Kaden Boriss Partners law firm, said Modi was backed by three legal opinions, two from India and one internationally acclaimed jurist, to prove a case for extension of stay in UK.
After Sushma Swaraj admitted to have helped Modi get a UK visa on ‘humanitarian grounds’, Raje came under fire for allegedly helping Modi stay in the UK ,in 2011.
In an expose to NDTV, Joginder Sanger, owner of Bentley hotel in London, said, there were 12 people at a dinner thrown in his hotel, including his family, Sushma Swaraj and her aide, besides Lalit Modi.
The BJP has asked its leaders to stay silent on the controversy, involving Vasundhara Raje. Sources say BJP president Amit Shah has asked Raje not to interact with the media.
Raje government signed an MoU with Lisbon-based Champalimaud Foundation on October 2, 2014, two months after Modi’s wife, Mrinalini Modi, underwent treatment for cancer.
In fresh new details suggesting a nexus between Raje and Modi, bills of Four Seasons Hotel in Mumbai show that he hosted the Rajasthan CM during her stay in 2010.
