The White House was put under a brief lockdown on March 28 after the US Secret Service reportedly discovered a ‘suspicious package’ near in the grounds. East wing tours were suspended and the Secret Service established a security perimeter after a man with a suspicious package approached a Secret Service officer near the presidential mansion.
According to reports President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence were inside the White House when the package was discovered.
A Secret Service spokesperson told the media that a male suspect had approached uniform division officers in the area of 15th and Pennsylvania (Avenue) and made suspicious comments following which he was arrested.
An explosive ordinance team was called to inspect the package.
“We established a security perimeter, so the media was moved in here and East Wing tours were temporarily suspended. All other activity in the White House continues as normal.” Secret Service spokeswoman Cathy Milhoan told reporters in the White House briefing room.
“We separated the individual and the package. He is now in Secret Service custody,” she added.
