Union External Affairs Minister Swaraj arrived in New York City on September 24 to address the 71st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on September 26.
Her speech is likely to give a sharp reply to Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif tirade on the Indian brutalities in Kashmir. This apart, Swaraj is also likely to raise the issue of human rights crimes in Balochistan, which the Pakistan army claims is insurgency.
Indian External Affairs Ministry officials in New York have confirmed that Swaraj will address the UNGA around 7 pm. Speakers have to call it day by 11 pm at UNGA; no additional time will be given to speakers on September 26 as the day coincides with the US presidential debate.
During his Kozhikode speech, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has made it clear the neighbouring country imports terror and that the provisions of the Indus Waters Treaty would be revisited again as the trust between countries in a bilateral treaty was important. This reflects that Modi is looking for another leverage instead of military action.
The PM will be briefed about the treaty by all concerned departments on September 26. The decision to relook the treaty comes days after the external affairs spokesperson highlighted that any treaty requires goodwill and trust on both sides.
