Surat man donates organs, saves four lives

The organs of Surat-based Ramesh Patel, 54, who was declared dead of brain haemorrhage after a road accident recently, were donated to four patients from Mumbai thus saving their lives.

After he was declared brain dead, “we spoke to his family for organ donations and they readily agreed. His liver and kidneys were sent to hospitals in Ahmedabad and the heart to Fortis Hospital”, said Nilesh Mandlewala, president of Donate Life, a NGO.

Since my father helped one and all, I decided to donate his organs so as to help other needy patients. “Now, he will always be remembered,” said Jay Patel, Ramesh’s son.

After receiving the consent of Ramesh’s family members for donating his heart and other organs, the airport and the traffic authorities of Surat and Mumbai came together and planned to bring beneficiaries to Surat.

Zonal director of Fortis Hospital S Narayani said of the 18 transplants performed here, this was the fifth time a heart was received from a Gujarat donor and “now we are s trying to build similar channels with other states.
