Supreme Court modifies Cauvery water release order

travel-srirangapatna-cauvery-from-bridge3The Supreme Court on September 12 altered its order on the sharing of the Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu and said Karnataka has to release less water than it was asked last week.

In its modified order, the SC asked Karnataka to release 12,000 cusecs of water daily till September 20, which is 3,000 less than what it (the state) was asked last week.

Karnataka had asked the court to suspend its order to release 15,000 cusecs of water to its neighbour and said that Tamil Nadu’s claims of an “agony” are false. The government told the SC on September 12 that Tamil Nadu was not suffering from a water crisis.

Making an exception in the Cauvery river water hearing, the SC’s order had led to tension between the two states in the past some days.

Earlier, Karnataka requested the SC to suspend its order, which the top court refused to do. At the same time, the SC made its displeasure with Karnataka plain for not implementing its order.
