Students ransack office, house of UoH VC after he resumed work

ransackedStudents went on a rampage in the University of Hyderabad on 22 March and attacked Professor Appa Rao’s office and smashed the furniture, computers and windows, hours after he resumed his duties.

The students were protesting against Rao who was in the eye of a controversy following Dalit PhD scholar Rohith Vemula’s suicide on 17 January.

According to initial media reports, the vice-chancellor was trapped inside his house as hundreds of students attacked his house.  After resuming duties, Rao had called a press conference in the campus. The protesters got wind of the media conference and prevented it.

It may be mentioned Vemula’s suicide brought about on the spur-of-the-moment outburst of grief and rage and a debate on caste discrimination in thousands of students across several universities.

Students blame the “dictatorial attitude of the Union government” in allowing Rao to resume his duties VC of University of Hyderabad.

Rao went on leave after Vemula’s for his inept handling of the suspension of five Dalit students, one of whom was Vemula.

However, Rapid Action Force and Telangana Police arrived at the university and brought the situation under control.
Several students shouting slogans, including some Azadi slogans, stood outside Rao’s office and house, while the state police threw a protective cordon.

Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union president Kanhaiya Kumar , who met Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi on 22 March will arrive at the university tomorrow. This is the first time that Gandhi has met Kanhaiya after his release from goal.
