shreejeshA month before Rio Olympics, Sardar lost his captaincy to Sreejesh. Normally a change in skippers just before an international match or tournament does not work wonders for the team.

But Sreejesh having already captained the team and understands the strengths and weaknesses of his team members.  On July 12, Union sports  minister Vijay Goel and several others announced Sreejesh as the new skipper of the Indian Hockey team at a glittering ceremony.

While newspaper reports have used words such as ‘axed’ or ‘dropped’ to describe Sardar’s sacking, it is not that the midfielder is not the force he used to be. But captaincy,  especially in sports such as football etc., has more to do with off-the-field obligations.

Moreover, the newly anointed captain could uplift the team’s sportsmanship spirit which could enhance their game on the field. In Champion’s Trophy, the team bagged a silver medal under Sreejesh’s captaincy. Hockey is a sport that requires support of all teammates and Sreejesh would now work as a catalyst in bringing the whole team together for a positive outcome.
