Adding a dash of humour and a dollop of unconventionality to modern day diplomacy, German ambassador Michael Steiner and his wife Eliese have re-enacted the title song of Bollywood film Kal Ho Na Ho. The video which begins with the declaration ‘for the love of Bollywood’ has Steiner playing the role of Shahrukh Khan, his wife playing Preity Zinta and Former External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid as Saif Ali Khan.
As the video (which got over 200000 views since its launch) plays out, it is hard to believe the man leaning on a pole and lifting his hands skywards (mimicking superstar Shahrukh Khan) is the German ambassador. Not only does Steiner carry out Khan’s signature move with elan but also manages to do justice to the actor’s much famed on-screen romancing.
Another element of surprise was the different avatar of a seasoned politician like Khurshid. In a departure from his trademark white kurta, Khurshid sports tees in the video where he attempts to dot the i’s and cross the t’s of playing Saif Ali Khan.
It is not the first time that Steiner has done something unconventional. He was the mastermind behind opening the German embassy for public projection of the football World Cup in July 2014. Despite objections and threats he has also organized Zubin Mehta concerts in Srinagar two times in a row. On being questioned whether the concert should be cancelled, he in a humour characteristic of him is reported to have said, “Let the music play”. And now the 65 year old diplomat by taking the Bollywood route has cleverly wooed a nation and in the process added some much needed tadka to the Indo-German ties.
For us in India, Steiner due to retire in June 2015 couldn’t have thought of a better way to say Auf Wiedersehen!
