A speeding Mercedes car hit people sleeping on a pavement in south Mumbai late last night, injuring five.
Amin Khan, driver of the car, who had earlier fled from the spot has now been arrested and a case has been registered at Pydhonie Police Station.
The incident occurred around 12:15 am at Masjid Bhandar Mohammed Ali Road when the white convertible, with a Jharkhand number plate, reportedly drove over a pavement where four women and a child were sleeping to eyewitnesses, the car rammed two other vehicles before climbing onto the pavement.
The injured are being treated at the government-run JJ Hospital. The condition of two is stated to be serious. All five were injured after being run over on 21 January night.
According to IBNLive, the incident took place when the victims were sleeping on the pavement post midnight. The report said that four women and one child were among the five people who were injured in the incident.
Another media report said that the white Mercedes drove over a pavement and crashed into a Toyota car. “The matter is being investigated. However, we are not sure of the number of persons inside the car…It can be determined only after thorough probe,” police officer Ashok Dhude was quoted as saying.
One of the doctors at JJ Hospital said they were checking the nature of injuries. The police said that the accident took place around 12.30am.
“We are still investigating whether the driver was under the influence of alcohol or something else caused the accident,” said a police officer. He confirmed there was no casualty.
