Congress leader Sheila Dikshit is rumoured to be Congress CM candidate for Uttar Pradesh Assembly polls. The former Delhi CM is likely to meet Congress president Sonia Gandhi and vice-president Rahul Gandhi on 16 June.
Senior party sources said the party is targeting on Dikshit as a possible CM candidate, with Priyanka Gandhi Vadra leading the UP election campaign.
To make an energetic comeback, the Congress has engaged the services of master poll strategist Prashant Kishor, who suggested the party field a Brahmin candidate for CM.
Also, Dikshit’s family ties will stand her in good stead in UP. Her father-in-law Uma Shankar Dikshit was a prominent Congressman from UP and served as a central minister and also as a Governor.
Sources close to Dikshit said she is yet to make up her mind and could well decline such an offer.
Kishor, who had earlier met Dikshit to discuss a role in UP, had suggested names of Rahul or Priyanka Gandhi as its CM candidate, but the party struck down the proposal.
While Priyanka Gandhi had confined herself to campaigning in Rae Bareli and Amethi constituencies, Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad said there was a need for her to campaign in other parts of the state too in.
At present, the Congress has 30 members in the 404-seat UP Assembly. Meanwhile, Dikshit is likely to be named as the party’s Punjab and Haryana in-charge after Kamal Nath had tendered his resignation to party chief Sonia Gandhi, reported India Today.
