Three militants were killed in an encounter on 23 June with the Indian Army in Kupwara district in Jammu and Kashmir. The army is yet to officially confirm the casualty if any.
The killings came four days after Lashkar-e-Toiba militant, Abu Ukasa alias Hanzulla, was arrested at Sogam market in Lolab area in Kupwara.
The encounter started on 23 June after personnel of 18 Rajasthan Rifles and Special Operations Group of the Jammu and Kashmir police received a tip-off about the presence of militants at Warnow village in Doban.
When the security forces zeroed in on the place, they came under heavy firing. The security personnel retaliated in equal measure. The firing is still continuing in the area.
“We suspect they were part of the same group of infiltrators that was intercepted near the Line of Control in Machil Sector,” said a senior police officer on condition of anonymity.
Infiltration has increased this year. Official sources said 50 terrorists have succeeded to enter Indian territory in the past five months.
