The Supreme Court on 21 September dismissed a public interest litigation (PIL) seeking direction to the central government to declassify documents on Subhash Chandra Bose.

The Supreme Court told the petitioner to approach the Centre directly regarding declassification of the files. The Union home ministry and the PM’s principal secretary were asked to reply to the petitioner in this connection.

The bench also gave two options to petitioner Snehasis Mukherjee that he should either go to the high court or wait for the government’s response the issue.

Mukherjee accused successive governments of not disclosing the facts and said “non-diclosure of such information amounted to denial of fundamental right”. He was told by the bench in no uncertain words not to bring in the issue of fundamental right everywhere. |

Referring to the recent disclosure of 64 confidential files by the West Bengal government, the petitioner sought a direction to Centre for dispensation to follow the suit.
