The Supreme Court has permitted one of the two Italian marines Salvatore Girone accused of killing two fishermen off the coast of Kerala,to return to his homeland on 26 May. The central government has supported his request to release him on humanitarian grounds. The request was granted on condition that he report to a designated police station in Italy every month and obey SC orders.
Girone has been staying at the Italian Embassy for the past four years despite Italy’s request to the Supreme Court.
The Supreme Court allowed the other co-accused Massimiliano Latorre to leave India for Italy for medical reasons. His stay has been extended till September 30 2016.
On the order of International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea, India had suspended all legal proceedings against the two marines last year.
