An RSS worker was pulled out of an autorickshaw in Kerala’s Kannur on 8 March by a group of men, who then  proceeded to attack him with sharp weapons.

Sitting in the auto and watching the proceedings were four children who the RSS worker, AV Biju, drove every morning to school.

Having received grievous wounds, the 35-year-old was rushed to the Kozhikode Medical College. He is now said to be in a stable condition. The police have filed a case of attempt to murder against five CPM supporters.

While this was so, Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader and former MLA P Jayarajan was remanded to three-day CBI custody in regard with an RSS functionary’s murder in 2014.

Manoj, 42, a district RSS functionary, was chopped to death in politically volatile Kathiroor in Kannur district on September 1, 2014, allegedly by a group of CPI(M) workers.

Thalassery Principal Sessions Judge V K Anilkumar allowed the agency’s plea, seeking custody of Jayarajan for questioning in the case.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) will question him on 9, 10 and 11 March and that an investigation officer should be present at that time of questioning, said the court. Presently, Jayarajan is under treatment in Kozhikode Medical College.

Kannur, seen as a CPM stronghold, has viewed several clashes between Left  and RSS workers. Stab wounds to Biju is not a single incident. Last month, a BJP worker was sliced to death in front of his parents by a group of CPM supporters. In December, 1999, KP Jayakrishnan Master, a BJP leader and was murdered while he wqas teaching students, again, by CPM workers.

In Kerala Assembly polls due in May, the CPM-led Left alliance Left Democratic Front is making to grab power from the Congress-led United Democratic Front.
