Gang rape accused Gayatri Prajapati who is a senior member of the Samajwadi party was arrested on March 15 from Lucknow. He was arrested from Aashiyana area of the city. Prajapati had been absconding since February 27. The minister along with six other people has been accused of gang raping a woman and molesting her young daughter. Other accused have already been held.
After being produced before the court, Prajapati has been sent to a 14-day judicial remand. On March 14, Prajapati’s sons and nephew were arrested on the charges of giving shelter to the accused.
The police had lodged an FIR against him on the directives of the Supreme Court. The apex court had asked the UP Police to submit an action taken report regarding the incidents in eight weeks.
UP Director General of Police Javeed Ahmad said Gayatri was being tracked for some time and that he was constantly changing his locations.
Reacting to the arrest of the SP leader, BJP leader Vijay Bahadur Pathak said the “State police was till now politicised. As soon as it has been freed from political pressures it has started performing resulting in the arrest”.
The 49-year-old Samajwadi Party leader unsuccessfully contested the just-concluded Assembly Elections in Uttar Pradesh from Amethi, a seat he won from in 2012.
