The Supreme Court is likely to hear on Thursday a CBI plea seeking restoration of the criminal conspiracy charge against senior BJP leaders, including LK Advani, Murli Manohar Joshi, Uma Bharti, Kalyan Singh and others in the 1992 Babri Masjid demolition case.
It may be recalled that the SC had adjourned the hearing on March 23 and asked the CBI, senior BJP leaders and another petitioner, Haji Mahboob Ahmed, to file written submissions on the issue.
There are two sets of cases – one against BJP veteran leader Advani and others, who were on the dais at Ram Katha Kunj in Ayodhya where many provocative speeches were made on December 6, 1992.
The other case was against lakhs of ‘karsevaks’ (volunteers) who were in and around the disputed structure.
The CBI chargesheeted Advani and 20 others under Sections 153A, 153B and 505 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
Justices PC Ghose and RF Nariman will hear the case. Last month, CJI JS Khehar had suggested an out-of-court settlement for the dispute.
