Rakesh Maria was removed as the Mumbai police commissioner and promoted as DG, Home Guards with immediate effect on Tuesday. The development comes as Maria is heading the probe in Sheena Bora murder case.
The transfer orders allegedly came directly from chief minister Devendra Fadnavis. NDTV says “Maria met Fadnavis on 8 September over the attention the police chief was giving to the Sheena Bora case.”
Though the CM lauded the police for its efforts, he made it clear that he wasn’t happy with Maria’s attention to the case. Maria had taken acute interest in the case and had himself interrogated the accused, including Indrani Mukerjea and Sanjeev Khanna, which is unusual.
Maria also briefed the media on the case progress. This when he had not given a single interview since he was made Mumbai police chief.
It may be noted Maria was to be transferred or promoted on 30 September, 2015. That his promotion came 22 days ahead shows it perhaps had something to do with the case he was handling.
Meanwhile, former Mumbai police chief Satyapal Singh told CNN-IBN, “There has to be something, why else the transfer? I heard he was close to Peter Mukerjea.”
“Maria has been promoted and posted as the DG of Home Guards in Mumbai in place of Ahmed Javed. Javed (who was DG, Home Guards) becomes the new CP of Mumbai,” said additional chief secretary (Home) KP Bakshi.
“There was no hurry in transferring Maria. It would have been wrong to transfer him on 30 September in the middle of Ganapati festival. Therefore, we decided to advance the promotion,” added Bakshi.
