Amid high tensions between India-Pakistan on Kashmir, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh will travel to Islamabad on August 3 to attend the 2-day South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) Home/Interior Ministers’ conference.
This will be the first visit by any top Indian leader to the neighbouring nation following the Pathankot Air Base attack which took place early this year. The meeting is scheduled for August 3 and 4.
The meeting came as a surprise, as the Union Home Minister and External Affairs Minister slammed Pakistan for its interference in India’s internal affairs, clearly pointing to the unrest in Kashmir. Earlier, Minister of External Affairs Sushma Swaraj had said, “Pakistan’s dream will not be realised even at the end of eternity.”
According to TOI, Singh may also have bilateral meetings with senior ministers of Nawaz Sharif’s government.
Experts also believe that the decision to allow the Home Minster to attend the conference at a time of high tensions could send a signal that India will fulfil its responsibilities in the regional dialogues.
