In a significant step towards adopting green fuel, Union Railway minister Suresh Prabhu flagged off the first train to run on CNG. The train will run on dual fuel system — diesel and CNG — on the Rewari-Rohtak section of the Northern zone.
The introduction of CNG trains will reduce the emission of greenhouse gases and also cut fuel bill due to less consumption of diesel, an official said.
The train will consume over 20 percent of the CNG in the 81 km stretch that it will cover in two hours. Gradually, however, the amount of CNG used will be increased to about 50 percent after test trials.
Prabhu emphasized on the use of alternative fuel in train operation, including the use of solar and wind power.
The train comprises of two power cars and six car coaches and has been manufactured by the Integral Coach Factory at Chennai.
