It has been nearly two months since Rahul Gandhi’s ‘leave of absence’. The congress vice-president’s last significant appearance was at the Budget session of parliament on the 23rd of February, the day on which the Congress party announced his sabbatical.
Rahul Gandhi is said to have arrived at the IGI airport in New Delhi this morning. Media reports wildly differ in his location – Vietnam, Thailand, Myanmar and Uttarakhand have been offered. The congress says that it isn’t right to know this information.
“Every individual has a right to privacy and we must respect that. Our vice-president did not escape or disappear… His one month absence seems to have become a problem in India,” said AICC spokesman P. C. Chacko.
The Congress party has been struggling against growing turmoil over the past few months, with the party disappointing in elections. Members have also stated that they would prefer Sonia Gandhi to continue heading the party, believing that the time is not yet right for Rahul Gandhi. Former Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, Sandeep Dikshit and Amarinder Singh all support the continuance of Sonia Gandhi.
Rahul Gandhi has timed his arrival with an important farmer’s rally on the 10th of April, organised by the party. The party is devoting much time and attention to make the rally a success. He will be playing an important role in the rally.
