Prohibitory orders clamped around police HQ in New Delhi

Prohibitory orders under Section 144 were clamped around the Delhi Police Headquarters after the reported police excesses on protesting students on 1 February.

Delhi Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung summoned Joint Commissioner of Police, Central, (JCP) SK Gautam, who is heading the probe into the alleged beating of the protesters by police personnel. The L-G sought an explanation into the incident from the JCP.

It may be noted the L-G summoned the JCP a day after a video of Delhi Police personnel assaulting protesting students went viral on social media and created a huge uproar. The video was also uploaded on You Tube.

The Jawaharlal Nehru Students Union and some other student groups protested at the Police headquarters. Police officers warned the protesting students not to break the law.

As the video begins, students are seen and heard raising slogans of ‘Delhi Police murdabad’, but it’s followed by a sudden aggression from Delhi Police, who end up beating the students mercilessly, even as they hit at the camera recording the same.

Criticising the attack on students, Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal tweeted that the BJP and the RSS use Delhi Police as their private army. “Delhi Police is being used by BJP/RSS as their private army to terrorise and teach lesson to anyone opposing BJP/RSS. I condemn attack on students.”
