Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid his rich tributes to freedom fighters Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev on their death anniversary.  “Salute to Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev who laid their lives for the country. Tributes to these great patriots,” tweeted Modi, who is on his first visit to Punjab after assuming office to pay homage to the freedom fighters at Hussainiwala where their last rites were performed in 1931.

“In Punjab today. Will pay homage to Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev and Rajguru at Hussainiwala and will go to Golden Temple and Jallianwala Bagh,” Modi tweeted.

“On their martyrdom day, I pay my respects to Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev and Rajguru who sacrificed their life for the nation,” he said in a statement.

Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev were tried for killing British Superintendent of Police Saunders on December 17, 1928, and were awarded the death sentence.

Born in September 1907, Bhagat Singh, one of the most influential revolutionaries of the Indian independence movement, was hanged on March 23, 1931 along with Rajguru and Sukhdev in Lahore.
