Pranab Mukherjee’s escort car falls into gorge near Darjeeling, 6 hurt


President Pranab MukerjeePresident Pranab Mukherjee was traveling from Darjeeling to Bagdogra when one of his escort cars met with an accident.

The incident took place around 17 km from Darjeeling town at Sonada. The driver of the escort car lost control of the vehicle, which skidded off the road.

According  to locals, the visibility was low due to foggy weather following which the vehicle slipped and fell 3o metre into the gorge and got stuck in a tree.

The President, who was accompanied by his daughter Sharmishtha and son Abhijit have been declared safe after the incident, while six persons who were injured were rushed to a hospital for treatment.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s convoy, which was following the President’s convoy and was heading to Bagdogra, was seen supervising the rescue operations after the accident.

A tweet on the President’s account after the rescue operation ensured Pranab Mukherjee’s safety. It said, “Unfortunate accident involving escort vehicle in convoy en route to Bagdogra today; everybody well by grace of God#President Mukherjee.”
