Panic grips as gunshots fired near 7 Race Course Road

7-RCR-112Havoc spread at 7 Race Course Road, the official residence of PM Narendra Modi, on late 18 November night, after gunshots rang out in the neighbourhood of the high-security zone.

It however, turned out that the firing happened when the AK-47 assault rifle of a PCR van of Victor 35 gunman went off accidentally. Three consecutive shots were fired at the spot, which is a parking lot near the 7 RCR. The police said that no one was injured in the accident.

“Head Constable Amarpal, in charge of Victor 35 called up Victor 1 in the central police control room and informed that while taking charge of the PCR, his rifle fired accidentally. The gunman has been identified as Constable Ramesh,” said a police officer.

Soon after, the police came over immediately to the spot and started a probe. All this while, the Kamal Ataturk Marg was under heavy security cover.

Meanwhile, intelligence sleuths are authenticating the constable’s backgrounds. In this regard, a case was being filed at Chanakyapuri police station. Section 336 of the Indian Penal Code may be invoked. Not only this, disciplinary action, including suspension, may also be initiated against the constable.

Coming after the Paris shooting, the gunfire sent shockwaves through the PMO, the home ministry, and senior police officers.
