Pakistan visa row: Shabana Azmi extends support to Anupam Kher

Shabana-Azmi1Critically acclaimed actor Shabana Azmi has expressed support for her fellow actor Anupam Kher after he was denied a visa to Pakistan. She says a similar situation was once faced by her husband, the celebrated lyricist Javed Akhtar.

Shabana tweeted: “Some years ago, Javed Akhtar, chair of Pakistan delegation was denied a visa. The Organiser cancelled the entire trip… I stand with Anupam Kher if he was denied visa.”

Kher on 2 February claimed he was denied a visa to visit Pakistan for the Karachi Literature Festival, which begins from 4 February. However, while 17 out of the 18 Indians who were due to go for the event, received their visas, the 60-year-old said he was ‘singled out” and did not get the travel document.

On Wednesday, Kher said that he has been offered one by the Pakistan High Commissioner to India, but the actor denied to accept it.

The tweet mistakenly mentioned a parody account instead of Anupam Kher’s twitter handle. Twitterati were quick to notice the goof up and the post was trolled. Azmi was quick to correct her mistake in the next tweet.
