As Geeta returns home from Pakistan after a long wait of more than a decade, Pakistan, in return, has appealed to India to released 459 Pakistani prisoners who are currently in Indian jails. Geeta, the speech and hearing impaired girl, accidentally crossed the international boundary more than 10 years ago.
Earlier in the day, Geeta arrived at New Delhi airport from Karachi. Indian officials, and Pakistani diplomats welcomed her at the airport.
“We have handed over Geeta to India and I hope that India will also release 459 Pakistani prisoners. Pakistan high commissioner Abdul Basit will host a reception to Geeta in the evening today and we will be there,” the media head of Pakistan High Commission, Manzoor Memon, expressed.
External affairs minister Sushma Swaraj also welcomed Geeta. “Geeta – Welcome home our daughter,” tweeted Swaraj. Before boarding a PIA flight, Geeta thanked the people of Pakistan, who took care of her for all these years.
Geeta will undergo a DNA test which will establish her relation with her family. “We will do a DNA test to establish conclusive proof of relation with the family Geeta has identified. If the DNA test is positive, we will hand over Geeta to the family. Else we have identified institutions where she can be taken care of,” MEA had said, on October 23.
