An editorial published in the journal Breastfeeding Medicine states that there has been a surge in online sales of breast milk, and not just for infants.
This valuable commodity is being bought from breast milk-sharing among mothers and sold in the online market not only to feed babies but as a “superfood” for body builders and athletes, it read.
“Breast milk has become a commodity as women recognise its commercial value—“donation of breast milk to regulated non-profit human milk banks is being threatened,” said Arthur Eidelman, editor-in-chief of Breastfeeding Medicine.
“Internet-purchased breast milk could also be risky as it can also also be mixed with cow’s milk or contain bacterial contamination due to improper storage and refrigeration,” warned the editorial.
