IN A disgusting display of intimidatory tactics, Supreme Court lawyer and Team Anna member Prashant Bhushan was roughed up by activists of the right-wing Sri Ram Sene and a little-known outfit called Bhagat Singh Kranti Sena on 12 October.
The high-profile lawyer was in the middle of a television interview when three men barged into his chamber in the Supreme Court premises and starting beating him up. The television camera captured the whole drama in which the assailants slapped and kicked Bhushan mercilessly until being stopped by those present. An FIR has been filed with Delhi Police and one of the three assailants arrested.
Referring to the Sri Ram Sene, Bhushan said at a press conference later the same day, “This is an organisation that needs to be socially boycotted and perhaps banned by the government. Such an organisation has no right to exist legally.”
The Bhagat Singh Kranti Sena claims that they were offended by Bhushan’s recent comments in Varanasi where, addressing a public meeting, he had advocated withdrawal of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act from Jammu & Kashmir.
The group accepted responsibility for the assault through its Facebook and Twitter page. It has also been involved in protests against author-activist Arundhati Roy. Prominent citizens, across party lines, condemned the attack.
