Keeping one of the electoral promises he had made to the people of Bihar, chief minister Nitish Kumar has announced ban on sale of alcohol in the state from April 1, 2016.
In the run up to the Bihar Assembly elections, the chief minister and JD(U) leader had, while reaching out to women voters, had promised to ban liquor sales in Bihar if his alliance won the assembly elections.
Soon after taking charge, excise and prohibition minister Abdul Jalil Mastan said, “We will start work to impose a ban on liquor sales in Bihar. The ban would come into effect in six months,” he had said.
Mastan said the demand on liquor sales had been made by many women, mostly from Dalit and backward castes.
