In a blow to the BJP before the Punjab elections, Rajya Sabha MP Navjot Singh Sidhu, has resigned from the Upper House on July 18.
The former India cricketer and BJP’s Lok Sabha MP from Amritsar may join the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), according to media reports.
The cricketer cum politician’s wife Navjot Kaur, a Parliamentary Secretary in Punjab SAD-BJP govt, might also resign from the saffron party, it is learnt.
“We will welcome Navjot Singh Sidhu if he wants to join AAP,” Kejriwal said while replying to a question that there was talk in the political circles that Sidhu would be projected as an AAP candidate in the upcoming Punjab assembly elections.
Sidhu, also a television celebrity, was troubled when he was asked to make way for Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley to fight 2014 general polls from Amritsar constituency. Sidhu had represented the constituency for a decade.
Meanwhile, Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal said he was confident of AAP sweeping the Punjab elections. “I am confident we’ll sweep Punjab elections looking at the current surveys. I won’t be surprised if Delhi is repeated in Punjab. The face of the party will emerge at the right time,” Kejriwal said.
