Muslims have been practising yoga since time immemorial, Uttar Pradesh minister Mohd Azam Khan said. He said the Bharatiya Janata Party was trying to communalise it by stressing on a particular mudra (exercise), Surya Namaskar.
Khan told reporters on 18 June said, “Lakhs and lakhs of Muslims have been practising yoga, which is “secular”, since several centuries. But by adding a particular mudra the BJP wants to spread religious hatred and separatism has it has always been anti-Muslim.”
Yoga is an exercise form and should be seen in that state. Taking a dig against the BJP, he said, “Spewing of venom against the minority community must be controlled.”
People such as Yogi Adityanath, who had apparently said those opposing yoga should drown themselves, and Sakshi Maharaj were acting as BJP spokespersons.
“Had Lord Ram been alive in this age, he would never have allowed Babri Masjid to be demolished”, but instead would have taken on those who razed the structure, said Khan, taking up the Babri Masjd issue.
Without taking names, he urged President Pranab Mukherjee to take note of those who have been running pharmacies and selling fake products.
“We are not opposed to yoga but are against those yogis who conspire to get rid of us,” said Khan, expressing his faith in yoga once again.
