MPs want 100% salary hike, 75% for former MPs’ pension

Parliamentary panel recommends doubling MPs salary.

A joint parliamentary committee has recommended to the Center, a 100 percent salary hike for parliamentarians. The recommendations includes nearly 75% increase in pension for former MPs and the  committee also proposes an automatic revision of salary for all MPs, similar to the pay commissions of public servants.

According to TOI, the panel’s recommendations of increasing the pension of elected representatives is from Rs 20,000 to Rs 50,000 and at least 60 recommendations have been put forward by the BJP MP Yogi Adityanath-led panel. The panel has also advocated for raising the the daily allowance of Rs 2,000 for MPs, which they get during Parliament sittings.

“The committee has reasoned that the last revision of MPs salary happened in 2010 and they don’t get any dearness allowance like that of government employees,” a government official said.

The panel has also recommended extending health benefits given to MPs and their children and grandchildren. An additional free AC first class ticket was also proposed for MPs personal aides, besides 20-25 free air travel in a year for MPs.
